Position Description

Job Summary:

Using the principles of client-centered care within the context of an interdisciplinary team approach, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), Clinical Services will provide nursing care to individuals with mental health concerns. This is a part-time, permanent position which comprises 56 hours per two-week period with an anticipated start date in mid-February 2018.  The successful candidate will be eligible for a partial prescription drug benefit and optional enrollment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan.

Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months. In order to avoid delays in beginning a position, interested applicants who reside in the City of London and are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 3 weeks to be processed and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

Job Description and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts physical and psychiatric assessments and makes appropriate referrals to community physicians and resources
  • Assist the client in making informed choices about health measures such as medications, immunization, disease management, etc.
  • Coordinate care collaboratively with all members of the interdisciplinary team as well as to fulfill nursing responsibilities in an independent, self-directed manner
  • Provide health teaching feedback, explanations and rationale for diagnostic tests, procedures and treatments
  • Assists clients in making healthier choices
  • Provide health teaching about mental illness and symptom management
  • Crisis intervention and prevention
  • Collaborates with community agencies to maintain coordination in the treatment process
  • Advocate for and support clients in accessing community resources
  • Advocating for clients to obtain psychiatrists, family doctors, dentists, etc.
  • Assist in motivating clients to learn new behaviors and develop coping skills
  • Provides advanced foot care to clients
  • Coordinates the foot care clinics and does outreach
  • Medication monitoring, management, and education
  • Make decisions with team and Director concerning operations of the clinical program, policies of CMHA Middlesex and accreditation standards
  • Client documentation in log books as required and the CCR each shift
  • Ensure effective communication with Director, staff team, and external treatment teams concerning individual client’s progress
  • Identify, promote resolution, and management of all emergency situations concerning clients, staff, and property
  • Complete all documentation as required
  • Other duties as required

Job Specifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Knowledge of the nursing care needs of clients with serious mental illness
  • Minimum of one year work experience in the mental health field
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications
  • First Aid
  • CPR
  • Certified in Foot Care
  • Medication Certification
  • Ontario Driver’s Licence
  • Access to a vehicle
  • Insurance adequate for transporting clients
  • Current, clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
  • Current certificate in pharmacology
  • Residential experience
  • Knowledge of community resources

  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to recognize and diffuse potential conflict situations
  • Knowledge of WHIMIS, fire, health and safety procedures

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Able to climb stairs
  • Ability to perform duties related to foot care

Hours of Work:

  • 56 hours per two-week period
  • Generally 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with one hour for lunch; occasionally will be required to work outside of those hours
