Position Description

Women’s Rural Resource Centre of Strathroy and Area (WRRC) is a non-profit agency whose mandate is to support women and children whose lives have been affected by woman abuse.  We provide counselling, transition support, advocacy, residential services, public education, advocacy, and second stage housing. 

WRRC is seeking a strong woman-centered Residential Counsellor for a full-time contract opportunity tentatively beginning April 10th, 2017 till December 29th, 2017.

Summary:  Working 38.75 – 41.25 hours per week, the Residential Counsellor is accountable to ensure a physically and psychologically safe shelter environment for women and children who have experienced abuse. 

Reporting Relationship: This position reports to the Manager of Operations.

Job Specifications:

  1. Ensure a physically safe environment by monitoring security cameras, conducting regular security checks, completing  risk assessments, reviewing safety procedures, enforcing shelter rules and guidelines, assessing and addressing safety concerns

  2. Ensure a psychologically safe environment for residents by being respectfully accessible to women, ensuring confidentiality of  information in accordance with agency policies, addressing and resolving emotionally unsafe situations in a women-centered manner

  3. Enhance women’s capacity to make informed choices by working with women accessing WRRC services (Shelter, Help-Line, or walk-in) through active listening, identifying strengths, and reviewing options.

  4. Conduct risk and needs assessment, develop safety plans, provide abuse education, offer information and referrals, provide advocacy, assess appropriateness for shelter stay and/or develop a plan for next steps

  5. Document interactions in accordance with policies, procedures and practices. Facilitate  the flow of information by maintaining client database, updating shift change, month-end procedures, and completing departure file management

  6. Determine the nature of  needs identified by women and children accessing WRRC service upon intake, through case planning coordination, through observation of  interactions with staff and other residents; by spending time with women and children in the residential setting in non-counselling situations; and by check-ins at start of shift

  7. As an integral member of the Residential Team, provide woman-centered services aligned with the plan of care as determined by the Team and the woman; providing service for resident children in accordance with plans developed by the Children’s Advocate, assisting with the evaluation of progress towards goals; by making suggestions and sharing observations with the Team or Children’s Advocate and documenting service provided

  8. Managing the shelter environment by monitoring supplies including groceries, ensuring cleanliness and good repair and assisting in controlling agency costs

  9. Facilitating the flow of service provision by cleaning, tidying, organizing shelter and counselling center spaces, ensuring adequate supplies for use by the Program Staff Team, doing minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs and ensuring completion of tasks as assigned by Full-Time Residential Counsellors or other agency staff and as outlined on shift change

  10. Identifying issues and barriers inconsistent with quality, client-focused service and develop recommendations for plans to address these issues

  11. Assuming responsibility for personal and professional development

Required Qualifications:

  • Superior communication and listening skills

  • Superior conflict resolution & crisis intervention skills

  • Superior assessment skills

  • Demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills

  • Demonstrated customer service skills

  • Good working knowledge of computer office technology and applications

  • Clear current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
  • CPR, First Aid, ASIST, CPI

Social Service Worker Diploma preferred; or equivalent relevant post secondary education and experience;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Employment experience with women and children in a shelter setting an asset
  • Fluency in other languages an asset

Hours of Work: 38.75 – 41.25 hours per week

Physical Requirements:

This position will require providing on-going emotional support and advocacy to women, youth, and children who have experienced woman abuse in a secured residential setting.  Ability to lift 25 lbs.
