The Richard Ivey School of Business present:
A series of workshops in the fall of 2011 for nonprofit organizations, local businesses and entrepreneurs who were seeking more information about starting or growing a social enterprise that supports their social mandate. See more about the project here.
Workshop 3: Business Planning & Market Research
This session is created for the purpose of teaching nonprofit leaders, who have a social enterprise concept, to plan for their future. The idea of sustainability of a nonprofit can be attained by applying traditional business practices to innovative social ideas. This session will teach nonprofit leaders how to complete a social purpose business plan and how to properly research their business concept in order to create an environment where the best possible outcomes are attainable and risk is mitigated to the best of their abilities.

After identifying a business opportunity and ensuring that it fits with the organization’s mission and capabilities (from workshop #1), and after conducting a readiness assessment (from workshop #2) to determine that the idea actually makes business sense, then it’s time to create a business plan – the roadmap for putting the business together.
The business plan includes identification and analysis of the business’s market opportunity as well as the venture’s business model, operations, management, social outcomes, and financial projections. Taken together, these components will allow you to develop a practical roadmap for executing your enterprise idea.
The “practical roadmap” of a business plan is what will be discussed within the group session, through interactive learning and tools for success.
