Solutions Lab - Frequently Asked Questions

Solutions Lab Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are we doing this type of workshop?
Groups working towards transformational systems change are increasingly using the term "Lab" to describe the effective process to achieve the desired outcomes. Design Labs and Change Labs use models that engage diverse perspectives and voices in the process of exploring and testing solutions to the big problems and needs of a community. Through the help of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant and sponsorship by London Life Insurance Company, Innovation Works will launch the London Life Solutions Lab in our community to address such issues as homelessness and childhood obesity. We have worked closely with the MaRS Solutions Lab and U.Lab to bring components of the Solutions Lab model to London.

Over the last 2 years, the Sisters of St. Joseph learned about and began to explore the U.Lab theory. They participated in a free online course called Transforming Business, Society, and Self with U.Lab and decided to host 4 in-person sessions in 2015-2016 to coincide with the course. During this time Pillar Nonprofit Network, London Arts Council, London Heritage Council & Emerging Leaders began to explore different types of “lab” models as well and participated in the U.Lab course.  As part of our own prototype, Pillar Nonprofit Network, in partnership with the Sisters of St. Joseph, London Community Foundation and Moss Leadership Consulting decided to host this 2 day event to explore what our “Solutions Lab” might look like.

Why should you attend this 2 day workshop?
You are interested in exploring and digging deep on a wicked problem impacting our community. You want to try a new model that has never been done in London before. Our experienced facilitator Chris Moss will walk you through a prototyping workshop format that will be engaging, thought provoking and action oriented. You will build up your idea, deconstruct your idea, and explore solutions with your peers.

What types of issues/problems can we work on?
We want the issues to come from the community so you tell us what issues are most important to you. Problems that would fit in this type of workshop are poverty, racism, diversity/inclusion, truth & reconciliation, gender issues, environment and much more. If you’re trying to solve any of these immense social problems, this may be for you.

Can groups be working on the same issue?
Yes, in fact you may find that some creative solutions come when you meet others working on the same problem. The more the merrier.

What if I can’t find people for my group, I really want to participate?
No problem! Let us know you’re interested and we may be able to fit you into another group that exists or help you find the people you should have join you. Let us know by emailing Chris (cmoss71@gmail.com) with your details.

What does the fee cover?
You are getting two full days of programming, great food, amazing company and working to solve your problem.  London Community Foundation & the Sisters of St. Joseph have generously donated funds to support this event and keep our registration fee as low as possible. It is important to us that this is accessible.
