Position Description

Got a skill that you can teach to children? Looking for a leadership opportunity that allows you to use your expertise, knowledge, and give back to the community at the same time?

We are looking for Activity Leaders & Assistants for our evening children's program at the Boys & Girls Club of London (BGCL).

Shifts Available:
Monday to Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (until 8:00 p.m. on Mondays & Wednesdays)

You will be working with children in Grades 1 to 8 (6 to 13 year olds).

Activity Assistants help staff members with programs and activities ranging from sports and fitness activities to creative arts. You will also be expected to help with supervision of children in program areas and hallways, transition times, set up and clean up of activities, and other duties as needed and directed by staff members.

Activity Instructor positions are also available for the activities listed below. Please contact the Volunteer Booth for more information.

Children are given the opportunity to create a schedule for activities they want to participate in. Activities could include but are not limited to:

  • Crafts - Knitting, crochet, traditional arts and craft activities
  • Music Lessons - piano, guitar, drumming
  • Fitness - dance, gymnastics (mat tumbling), yoga
  • Educational programs - homework help, literacy activities
  • Nutrition - learning how to cook simple meals, snacks, etc.

To volunteer, you must submit a Volunteer Application (obtained from our website or complete online) and include 3 references on the application. ReferencesĀ cannot be family members or equivalent.

If you are 18+ years old will be asked to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC). A letter will be provided to obtain the PVSC after the references have been contacted by our staff. There is a mandatory waiting period before adult volunteers can begin volunteering (approximately 4-6 weeks). The cost for the PVSC will be reimbursed after a probationary period.

Training and orientation will be provided to all volunteers before their first shift. There will be take-home reading required for volunteers as part of training.

This opportunity is available at our downtown facility. Public transportation and free parking is available.

Skills Preferred

Comfortable in group setting with 12-15 children at a time.
Able to problem solve
Good communication skills - verbal and written
Able to work within a team environment
Ability to speak another language is an asset (ex. Arabic, Kurdish, Spanish, Korean)

Required Qualifications/Training

First Aid & Level C CPR + AED is an asset but not mandatory
